Liverpool win award for clinical sharps collections

Liverpool Streetscene Services Ltd (LSSL) receives the Award for Excellence in the Service Change at Local Authority Level for their “Amazing sharps service at half the cost – transforming clinical collections” service.

This year’s Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management took place on May 16th 2024 at JW Marriott Grosvenor House in London. Regarded as the most prestigious event in the waste and recycling industry, participants from around the country were judged across 20 categories for their innovation and dedication within the sector.

LSSL provides a ‘sharps bin’ clinical waste collection service to residents across the city, many of whom are vulnerable or suffering with poor health, that is both simple and reliable with their innovative collection software.

Created in conjunction with Bartec Municipal Technologies, residents simply need to reply ‘COLLECT’ via text message and the new technology platform can find all necessary collection information from the user’s mobile phone number. The collection is immediately scheduled and a booking confirmation is sent outlining the collection time.

Since implementation in 2023, the number of missed collections has reduced by over 60% as rounds become more manageable, and the average working hours per week to deliver the service has fallen by a staggering 50%. Residents are benefitting from an impeccable service that meets their needs, while the council is alleviated from budgetary constraints and limited resources.

Collection crews now receive their daily route on their mobile device which sets out the optimal driving route. They can see any special requirements for each collection, which is very important for this group of users. Each collection is confirmed electronically as it takes place.

The service has been designed to be completely portable and is now being actively promoted by Bartec Municipal Technologies across the UK. This new system can be implemented in a very short timeframe by reusing the software components and the knowledge gained during the implementation.

The event was overseen by an expert judging panel featuring Susie Burrage OBE, Recycled Products Ltd; Cathy Cook, LARAC; Chris Ellis, FCC Environment UK Ltd; Jacob Hayler, Environmental Services Association; Louise Lambourne, Permiserv; Dimitra Rappou, Confederation of Paper Industries; John Woodruff, Ricardo; Jarno Stet, National Association of Waste Disposal Officers (NAWDO); Libby Stonell, letsrecycle.com; Martin Trigg-Knight, Clarity Environmental; and Julia Turner, Wood Recyclers Association.

Over 450 people were in attendance at the award ceremony, with 20 Awards of Excellence being offered to organisations that embody positive advancement within the recycling and waste management industry.
